ENGINEER’S DAY (SPEECH)

Many of us have a habit of learning from anything or any incident happening around us. I believe that at least some of those people, who have this habit, must have learned something from their profession as well. In a similar way, I have also learned something from my profession; something very basic to our profession.

The thing that I have learned from being a software engineer is the value of process; the value of providing correct inputs to get correct and appropriate output. We, being software engineers, know that if the process or the system is designed correctly then there are very less chances of having bugs.

So today, I am going to talk about a bug, a defect; a severe defect in our system that we all must have observed at some point of time.

I have two questions for you:

     1)  How many of you have faced that feeling which comes when a person with government job or any of your relatives point out that you are just doing a private job and it is not as worth as a government job?

-          I think many of us have faced it.

2  2) How many of you have experienced the actual miserable life which is mostly being rumored about software engineers, which includes staying late in the night, working sluggishly with no output etc.

-          Again, many of us.

So my point is, can’t we, being software engineers, being the ones who develop and correct complex processes, fix that bug in the system which has caused these problems?

Yes, we can. And in fact we are the only ones who can solve these problems because we are the ones who have introduced them.

Some of you may not agree to what I just said but I can prove that we have caused these problems and we can solve them.

a.       Problem 1: Overburden of work

 I know there are people who are actually over burdened. But we all know that the percentage of overburdened people is not more that 30% and we use this 30% to generalize industries’ work culture. I have seen rest 70% doing the usual 8-9 hours WHICH INCLUDES lunch, snacks, tea, coffee etc etc etc etccc; still they behave like they are being put to the worst working conditions. Many of them actually have TIME MANAGEMENT problem. I am not saying 8-9 hours is less but it’s just fine. The problem is we compare it with govt job. Although, we know that THEIR behavior (slacker, shirker) is wrong but still we don’t want to correct THEM, instead we want to be like them.

Saying about the actual 30% overburdened, the problem is with upper management. They create problems with incorrect estimates, improper management of resources etc. They need to show empathy for employees. We are working to live, not living to work. They can correct that problem. They can fix that bug.

b.      Problem 2: Crying about having no work

Did you see the irony? We cry for having more work and we cry for having no work. So basically, sometimes we just want to cry, whatever be the reason. So it’s more of a habit than a reason. So sometimes we should actually identify that we are crying for a real reason or fake one. It’s again a question of time management. During less work, time can be utilized in learning new technologies or other important work.

c.       Problem 3: Crying for salary.

This is a relative problem. It varies from technology to technology, company to company, with person’s abilities etc. So saying that everyone gets very less salary is injustice. So this problem should not be generalized. Most of us get a decent pay. On the other hand, companies should take care that at least talented people don’t feel underestimated/taken for granted.

So basically, problems are not as big as we make them and we cry about them in front of others and that’s causing the defect I am talking about.

Some of you may still not be convinced with my analysis for the cause of the problem. So now I am going for one of the most important thing that I have learned from being a software engineer and that thing is “Root Cause Analysis”. Yes, the analysis that we do for defects so that they won’t repeat again; so that we can solve problem from root. And here, the root cause is, “We are not proud of being a Software Engineer”.

I will not apologize for what I have said right now but I am apologizing in advance for what I am going to say now because it may hurt sentiments of some people and that is, “I AM proud of being a Software Engineer”

In fact, I believe every one of us should be proud. We are the ones who have transformed some of the most tedious processes to very easy and quick ones, for example, railway ticket booking, internet banking, online shopping etc. We are the ones who have developed operating systems for very complex machines, like super computers, robots, spaceships etc. We are the ones who are providing exciting features to mobile users daily.

Yes, I am proud of being engineers because we are making life of people easier. Yes, I am proud because we are stopping corruption by converting manual systems to automated ones like passport issuing process etc.

We have all the capabilities to provide best processes to the world. I am connecting to the point from which I started; the PROCESS. We can make the best processes of the world.

Some of you might be thinking that I have not developed IRCTC or internet banking or operating systems or any process of stopping corruption then why should I be proud?

I have one question for you, are you proud of being Indian? If yes... why?

Do you have all those so called Indian qualities which are proud worthy? NO.

Then why are we proud of being Indian? Because that’s what connect us. If any Indian does something to be proud of, we feel proud. So why can’t we feel proud if any software engineer does something. We can and we should. Because that’s what connect us.

We are the best brains and we should be proud of that. We should present that picture to the world that we deserve. We deserve to be seen with proud and respect because WE ARE THE BEST BRAINS OF THE WORLD.

INFOSYS CAMPUS EXPERIENCE

The experience of Infosys campus drive was not same as persistent. It was easier because one, it was close and two, it was actually easier. I already had one experience so it was easier to plan also. I knew about it about 1 month before but I actually started my preparation on 10^th of January. I downloaded some recent papers from freshersworld.com and studied them for pattern and sections which are mainly asked. I pointed out my week areas and collected materials to study. My concern was on those week areas only and that too for written exam only. I knew that interview will be damn easy.

11^th January 2011:

I started with English section because I knew it is greater hindrance for me because questions like error detection and correction are very much susceptible to wrong answers. Whole day my focus was on English. I referred to books as well as internet for study material. I will suggest TIME material of Reasoning and verbal ability.

12^th January 2011:

I started quantitative section. Again it was planned what to study. I would like to suggest R S Agrawal for that and TIME material also.

13^th January 2011:

I was prepared for written but it is never confirmed that your preparation is enough so I was also afraid whether I will clear it or not. Reporting time was 1:00 PM. Pre-placement talk started at about 2:30 PM. We were called in for written at about 4:00 PM. After filling forms written actually started at about 4:45PM and ended at about 6:00PM.

Both sections were neither too easy nor too tough. One thing that I will suggest is that don’t read passages. Read questions and try to find answers directly and also attempt it at last.

They told us result will be declared at about 7:00 PM but we knew it will not be open till 8:00- 9:00 PM. So many of us left (including me) for home while some waited there. Result was opened at about 10:30PM when I was already preparing for interview and got a call from my friend about my selection.

14^th January 2011:

Reporting time was 9:00 AM and I was there at sharp 9:00. They told us that firstly interview of LNCTS and JNCT students will be done so we were free for some time. Interviews of LNCT started at about 11:30AM. We were told to wait in seminar hall until we are called for interview. In seminar hall they collected resumes and attached it with form that we filled before written. I was called for interview at about 3:30 PM.

I was prepared for interview and already knew that they are only interested in 4 qualities:

1) Communication skills

2) Leadership skills

3) Academic project

4) Confidence

And I found the same in the interview. All questions and my answers also were focused on these qualities.

We were told to wait in SAC after interview. At about 6:00 we were called in seminar hall for announcement of results. Soon results arrived and I heard my name which I could hear at the time of persistent because I was in my way.

There were several smiling faces and lot of shouting. It was looking like India winning world cup.

MY FIRST CAMPUS INTERVIEW

Pre Campus:

10 – 11 Nov 2010

I got info that persistent is coming for campus on 10 Nov 2010 in SISTec college of Gandhinagar, Bhopal and filled the registration form at that time itself. 1500+ students got selected for written exam. Then next day I went to M. P. Nagar to collect my admit cat. I got first batch of 8:30 AM reporting time. My admit card number was 0322. I prepared all my stuff for written as well as interview as I thought they will be on same day.

Campus:

12 Nov 2010

I left home at 7:50 AM with my friend Amit Rajput for SISTec. I reached at 8:20 AM and got queued to enter. Then we were taken to the seminar hall at SISTec for written. Written started at 10:29 AM an consisted of two papers – one was objective with 60 technical questions to be solved in 60 min and second was a subjective consisting of a program to be made and a note on a topic to be done in half an hour. Then we were told to go home. The result of the written was declared at about 8:30 PM and fortunately I was selected at 20^th rank (among 174 selected for interview) in the first batch to be interviewed at 10:30 AM. The reporting time was 9:00 AM for all selected students.

13 Nov 2010

The day of interview came and I was not certain at that time whether I have to join or not. But still it was my first technical interview so I was a little nervous. I left for SISTec at 9:00 AM which was the actual reporting time. I got call from my friend Bharat in my way to SISTec. He told me a great thing that it is not my dream company and so I should not be tensed about anything.

I reached SISTec at 9:30 and went into the seminar hall where they were getting ready to give presentation. They told us in presentation that we will be given 3 lakh package +other incentives. Then I decided that I can try for it. I was actually called at 10:30 AM for interview but my first interview held at about 2:30 PM after a long wait. It was pure technical interview. They asked me about DBMS, DS, OS etc and mainly java as I told them I am more comfortable with java. Interview goes for about 1 hours and I am happy that I was selected.

Then again there was a long-long wait. I become so tired that I was not able study any further and at about 7:00 PM onwards they started taking interviews of girls first. So we understood that we will have to wait more. Then finally at about 8:30, they called me for 2^nd interview. The second interview was very good. They asked me all about my resume so I was able to tell clearly. So I would like to suggest don’t lie in your resume. After the second interview I was assured of getting selected for HR interview.

After 5-10 min they brought me a form to fill up for HR interview. I waited outside the HR room and I was called inside at about 9:30. HR didn’t ask a lot. He asked me about what I think about Indian Sports Scenario and about my family background and also about my future plans for higher studies. He was looking satisfied and told me to come next day at 4:00 PM. I was the last candidate of the day.

I left home with my brother Ashish Tiwari at 4:00 PM as I thought they will definitely be late today also. But in the way I got call from my friend Ashirwad that your name is announced come soon. I was at 10 min distance and reached there on time. The persistent team was giving a seminar and all selected students were there. I joined the group and confirmed from Ashirwad “Am I selected?” With his “Yes” I was out of this world and felt very happy on my first campus selection.

Total 30 students were selected.

PREFACE

The article presented here is regarded as “a scientific proof of god” by the author. It is based on an interesting concept of “Fact + Fiction” which involves relating known facts with our imagination. The same concept has been a source of discovery of many new concepts (especially in chemistry) for many years. ENERGY CONCEPT OF GOD

Long ago… that is about million and billion years ago; the whole of the universe was concentrated to a point mass. Some internal changes occurred in the structure of that mass and an explosion took place and our universe got created. In that vast universe; there was a small fire ball which got cooled with time and formed a spherical mass, called earth. Due to some chemical reaction between methane coming out of earth’s core and the nitrogen of atmosphere along with other supporting elements, under suitable pressure and temperature… first molecule of life was created. This was the scientific story of creation of life. According to Darwin, all species including human beings have originated from that first molecule of life. But our mythologies say that this world is created by god (like Brahmdev and other gods) who created first living creature from their own soul.

There are a large number of such kinds of people who believe on mythologies for such things. They are called as religious (sometimes orthodox) by other people. They have complete faith in god. They say that god is everywhere. God is omnipresent, he is omnipotent. He is present everywhere in different faces, in different forms. He is also present inside me and you. God is that power which cannot be created which cannot be destroyed. God is the supreme spirit (param-aatma). Even a leaf cannot move without his permission.

There are some other persons who believe on scientific theories about the creation of life. They think that the god is nothing but a mere belief of people. They think about religious people as narrow minded persons.

In addition to these two, there is a third category of people which believe on the presence of god but do not believe blindly on mythological stories. The number of such people is increasing day by day.

After knowing the thoughts of the three kinds of people about god, the question to be answered is that, which is correct direction to follow? Which the correct way to go along? In my opinion the first type of people are concentrated inside themselves; they do not want to see the outside world. They are so called adhyatmic. The second type of people is only outside, they are not aware of inside world. The third type of people does not want to be involved in such debate and has accepted to go to a middle way. I think that the correct answer can be found out by keeping the views of religious people inside (adhyatm) and science (real world) outside us. So let’s try – “.................thinking……………………………………………………………………………………Energy!” “Yes, god is energy.”

Yes, energy is one which is present everywhere in one or the other form and is also indestructible. “Energy can neither be created nor can be destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another” [Reference: Law of conservation of energy]. It is energy without which even a leaf cannot move. It is energy which is surely present inside us and is responsible for our each & every movement.

This thought may lead to another important result that spirit or soul (atma) is also a form of energy. Spirit (atma) is a small amount of energy and god (called paramatma in Hindu mythology) is the huge amount of energy present around. When a person dies, it is said that his soul mixes with god [“atma paramatma mein leen ho jati hai”]. It is natural that the energy present inside the person in the form of soul goes out and mixes with surrounding energy. It is experimentally observed that when a person dies some weight loss occurs and this experiment proved that something (soul) has gone out and thereby proved the presence of soul. This weight loss may be due conversion of mass into energy. [Reference: Einstein’s mass-energy equation, E = mc²].

The phenomenon of spirits has been fascinating for years for both scientists and common people. Some people said that they have seen ghosts (spirits of dead people). Some cases of rebirth have also been observed and it is said that in these cases the soul of person remain same in both of his births. Bhagwat Geeta also says that soul is immortal, only body dies not the soul (atma amar hai, jo mara hai wo phir janam lega). Now the question arises how these things are possible about spirit, soul or energy?

Consider the situation that exits in a floppy disk. There is a combined electric and magnetic field which does the work of storing required information. There is a same kind of field in an atom. Electrons revolving around nucleus impart electric field while spin motion of electrons forms magnetic field. Hence, an atom is capable of storing, not much, but a little bit of information. Hence when a person dies, the information stored in his mind goes out along with the spirit (energy). The reach and effect of this information are very great. This information may get stored in the atoms around the place or it may also travel to a place where a baby is born and may get entrapped in his delicate mind which can catch any information knocking it. Hence, rebirth occurs. Further, ghosts are seen by the people at the place where the corresponding person has died and these are generally seen by those who knows about the presence of ghost at the place or those who are afraid of ghosts or those who have some close relation with the dead person. This incident is closely related to resonance (Resonance, in short, is the situation when two frequencies matches and tuning occurs, as in a radio). The person who sees a ghost will surely have any kind of reference for the dead person so that the atmosphere around the place shows him whatever he wants to see. The discussion shows that the sight of ghost is just a chemical imbalance (called as chemical locha in lage raho munnabhai).

After this long discussion one may also think that if god is only energy then what is the need to pray god? & why should we go to a temple? When a child is born, a particular field of energy created by position of different astrological elements like planets etc. becomes an integral part of him for whole life (in the form of horoscope). The interaction of that energy and energy around the person governs the fate of a person (studied under astronomy). The prayer of god is actually an approach towards maintaining a safe interaction between these two energies. The prayer of god in temples is suggested because a temple’s atmosphere is filled with positive thoughts which ensure a better result of prayer.

Finally, it could be and it should be concluded that the presence of god is certain. But god is not the same as told by those orthodox people who says widow remarriage is a sin and would be punished by god, who says that even a potato showing trunk should be prayed, who said that kurbani(act of killing animals to show devotion to god ) is a way to make god happy. God is not that which comes inside body of some people and others began to pray them. God is a scientific fact. It has created us and is still guarding and guiding us. The sun in the sky is nothing but a real god for us as it is the main source of energy for earth and I hope that it will be there forever for us.
