To know about what sun club is and what we do you must know about OSUM, i.e. open source university meet up, and to know about this open source university meet up you must know about open source. So I m going to start with:

·         What is open source?
Open source refers to all those programs whose source code is open i.e. free to all. Anyone can see it, modify it and even submit it for approval. Open source is not just a term it’s a philosophy, it’s a culture and it is an ideology which says that “Knowledge belongs to world”. Knowledge is not a monopoly of anyone. It should be shared to grow up.

For example, VLC media player, Google chrome, open office, Virtual Box, MySQL, Apache Tomcat server, Eclipse, FreeBSD(operating system derived from Unix),Mozilla Fire fox, Thunderbird, 7-zip etc. even OS like Linux and Unix, Ubuntu Solarisis are open source.

·         What are OSUM and Sun Club?
The Open Source University Meet-Up is a student developer organization sponsored by Sun Microsystems that educates its members about open-source technologies through technical demonstrations, access to web courses, and discounts on Sun Certification.

The Open Source University Meet-Up is a place for Sun to connect student developers to Sun’s wide array of open source software platforms, following Sun’s initiatives to open-source all of its software technologies. As a whole it also helps give software developers, students, and other interested people an opportunity to learn more about open source software.
Some years back OSUM started a program for universities and colleges in which it selected some people from colleges to act as a campus ambassador for them. These campus ambassadors were meant to spread the new technology in their respected institutions and clubs like sun club were the result of that program.
